2nd/3rd Grade
For the fall of 2010 we are offering a 2nd/3rd combination class encompassing the following subjects:
Religion: Bible concepts, scripture, and stories are presented to the students during instruction time and are also incorporated as part of the entire school day. Weekly Chapel services are led by Pastor Kerney where students can express their faith through worship and praise.
Language Arts: "Reading strategies are organized into five categories; reading, writing, listening and speaking, appreciating literature and language, study skills and information resources. The design of the program is that the same major strategies and skills are taught across units in a grade level and across grade levels in the program. Students are encouraged to personalize and transfer these strategies to other reading contexts and subjects outside the Language Arts class."

Mathematics: Our mathematics program is Saxon Publishers Math Program. It is the Saxon philosophy that mathematics instruction should build on prior learning. New learning is presented in increments, with time provided between increments for practice. "Mathematical strands are integrated throughout the year rather than taught in isolated units. Areas covered by both 1st and 2nd grade are Number Sense, Algebra and Functions, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability and Mathematical Reasoning."
Science/Social Science: Science and Social Science are taught in themes that provide students with opportunities to explore their world and then to use what they have learned. We follow the California State Standards regarding areas to be covered such as physical, life and earth sciences and good citizenship, geography, and American heroes.
We offer three enrichment programs.
Music: Students develop rhythmic skills through the use of instruments, singing, games and listening activities designed to develop music appreciation. Students perform in several Cross and Crown Lutheran School and Church programs throughout the year. This class meets weekly.
Spanish: Once weekly, the students are taught the basics of the Spanish language by a native language instructor.
Physical Education: Bi-weekly the students attend P.E. classes for directed activities. Structured games, physical fitness and other activities help the students develop many coordination skills and general physical fitness as well as good sportsmanship behavior.
